As part of the research project to compare the value of POET® Corn Fermented Protein (CFP) with a rumen-protected soy protein (AminoPlus®) for early-lactation dairy cattle, researchers at Dairy PHDR&D (Fort Atkinson, WI) captured weekly milk component data for the duration of the study.
Figure 1. Milk fat protein and percentage for cows fed POET CFP or a rumen-protected soy protein

Figure 2. Milk fat and protein yield for cows fed POET CFP or a rumen-protected soy protein

Research at-a-glance:
- One-hundred and twelve (112) multiparous Holstein cows
- Diet 1 – 7.8% (DM) POET CFP
Diet 2 – 7.8% (DM) AminoPlus - Weekly milk samples collected from three consecutive milkings sent to a lab for analysis of milk fat and protein
Key Findings:
- Greater fat percentage during early lactation can indicate signs of ketosis and excessive body mobilization of nutrients
- Components started to differ around week 4 of
the study - Over the duration of the study, cows fed AminoPlus averaged 4.79% and 3.13% for milk fat and milk protein, respectively. Cows fed POET CFP averaged 4.47% and 3.05% for milk fat and milk protein, respectively.
- Cows fed POET CFP had >3.8 pounds increased milk production, resulting in similar yields of both milk fat and milk protein.
DID YOU KNOW…
Changes in milk components suggest that POET CFP affects metabolism in the early-lactation cow. This could potentially reduce the risk of certain metabolic disorders.
Research conducted at PHDR&D (Fort Atkinson, WI) with 112 multiparous early lactation Holstein cows (Figure 1) receving either:
Diet 1: 7.8% DM POET CFP or Diet 2 7.8% DM AminoPlus. Daily milk weights collections were over a 70 day study.
