Let's take a closer look at a few of POET's patent filings.
POET's first family of patents relate to the no-cook BPX® process. This patent family allowed us to become the most efficient ethanol producer in the world by eliminating the cook step of the conventional ethanol production process. Elimination of this step reduced energy input, decreases the yeast stress in the mash which allows for increased ethanol yield. This no-cook process also produces a more consistent, higher quality dried distiller’s grain with solubles (DDGS) that is utilized to aid animal nutrition profiles. The BPX® process was a foundational technology for the biorefinery model. It enabled higher yield, higher gravity, and a more diverse co-product range. A subfamily within BPX® includes our corn fractionation efforts which increases biorefinery product and process opportunities.
Our family of patents related to extracting Voila® corn oil from syrup provides an additional product stream that can be utilized in multiple markets including, but not limited to, the production of biodiesel, mixing into animal feed to improve fat content and even as an additive to recycled asphalt as a natural rejuvenator.
The Load Toad® family of patents was developed to improve the process of loading railcars with dried distiller’s grains (DDGs). It allows for more consistent flow of DDGS which improves fill in the railcars. Increasing the amount of DDGS in each railcar increases transportation efficiency which decreases environmental impact and transportation costs when shipping long distances.
POET patents in the Zein family provide a means for extracting protein from the ethanol production process. Protein is a critical element in human and animal diets and communities worldwide could benefit from additional sources of non-animal protein.
Total Water Recovery is a family of patents that came from POET’s desire to decrease water use across the POET biorefineries and improve water conservation. These inventions allow for the reduction of water brought into the biorefinery while also recycling water back into the system to prevent the release of excess waste water.
The patent related to the Combustion of High Solids Liquid provides a recycled fuel source to help manage energy use at locations with a solid fuel boiler. This source uses syrup, an energy containing co-product, as an energy source for the biorefinery. Depending on local commodity prices, this syrup can be utilized through addition into the solid fuel boiler. This creates a local sustainable energy source. This application is complimentary with the use of methane gas from landfills.
The Dual Tank Heat Transfer patent was designed to help recover heat loss during condensing of vapors. By capturing this heat and recycling it into the system, less energy is required to run the process, helping to decrease costs and decrease environmental impacts of energy production.
New patents related to the cellulosic ethanol production process are helping to drive the advancement of second generation production methods. These inventions are tested and validated at our POET Research Center in Scotland, SD and commercialized at POET-DSM Project LIBERTY in Emmetsburg, IA. Creative thinking leads to new ideas and improvements on existing processes providing a wide range of innovation opportunities.
