Objective

Determine the impact of replacing soybean meal (SBM) and DDGS combination with POET® Corn Fermented Protein (CFP) and DDGS combination on milk yield and components in a commercial dairy.

Methods

Commercial dairy farm utilizing 170 lactating, multiparous Holstein cows over 56 days. Treatments consisted of either a combination of SBM and dry distillers grains (Control) or CFP and dry distillers grains within the diet (Table 1).

Data presented in Table 2 are calculated herd averages with daily milk yield provided by Lely robotic system and components analyzed by DFA, with cows averaging 2.6 visits/day (data not shown).

‍

Results

Cows consuming CFP produced 2.1% more milk than the control diet containing SBM. Milk fat concentration increased 2.0% and milk protein by 4.1%, this is a result of the increased milk production and increase in milk protein % and constant milk fat %. Energy corrected milk increased with slight reduction in MUN milk urea nitrogen values during the CFP feeding period.

Economics

CFP increased income over feed costs by $0.30/head/d with even greater premiums achievable when increased milk components are factored in.

Research conducted at PHDR&D (Fort Atkinson, WI) with 112 multiparous early lactation Holstein cows (Figure 1) receving either:
Diet 1: 7.8% DM POET CFP or Diet 2 7.8% DM AminoPlus. Daily milk weights collections were over a 70 day study.
