POET welcomes EPA response to the Growth Energy Green Jobs waiver for E15

E15 needed to achieve renewable fuel targets and develop cellulosic ethanol

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – POET, the world’s largest ethanol producer and a leading developer of cellulosic ethanol, welcomed a letter from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the Growth Energy Green Jobs Waiver.

“We were pleased that the EPA’s letter shows a clear path to E15,” POET CEO Jeff Broin said. “Without increasing the base blend of ethanol to E15, it will be impossible to achieve the targets set in the Renewable Fuel Standard and there will be no market for cellulosic ethanol. POET is spending tens of millions of dollars to commercialize the production of ethanol from harvest leftovers but needs E15 to be certain there will be a market for the product.”

Because the science overwhelmingly supported higher blends of ethanol, POET was among the 54 ethanol producers to sign the Growth Energy Green Jobs Waiver that was submitted to the EPA on March 6, 2009. The waiver can be found at http://www.growthenergy.org.
