POET to outline tech advances at Beijing conference

Sino-US Advanced Biofuels Forum speakers include Energy Secretary Steven Chu, other world government and science leaders

Thursday, May 20, 2010

POET Senior Vice President of Science and Technology Mark Stowers will detail breakthroughs in cellulosic ethanol technology at the Sino-US Advanced Biofuels Forum in Beijing on Thursday, May 27.

Stowers will join top officials in government and science, including U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and China’s Director of the National Energy Administration Zhang Guobao, as well as industry experts and university leaders in multiple areas of biofuels.

Stowers will discuss POET’s work in commercializing cellulosic ethanol made from corn cobs and high-cut material. He will also discuss the overall state of the cellulosic ethanol industry. He will take part in a Q&A as part of the Conversion and Biorefinery Panel starting at 2:50 p.m. (UTC+8) May 27 at Shangri-La’s Kerry Centre Hotel, Beijing.

Project LIBERTY is a planned 25 million-gallon-per-year cellulosic ethanol plant in Emmetsburg, Iowa. The plant will be co-located with POET’s existing 55 million-gallon-per-year grain ethanol plant at the site. Construction will begin this summer. POET also currently operates a pilot-scale plant in Scotland, S.D. POET has spent more than $40 million in cellulosic ethanol research over the past 10 years.

About POET
POET, the largest ethanol producer in the world, is a leader in biorefining through its efficient, vertically integrated approach to production. The 22-year-old company produces more than 1.6 billion gallons of ethanol and 9 billion pounds of high-protein animal feed annually from 26 production facilities nationwide. POET also operates a pilot-scale cellulosic ethanol plant, which uses corn cobs as feedstock, and will commercialize the process in Emmetsburg, Iowa. For more information, visit http://www.poet.com.
