POET plant celebrates safety milestone

Caro, Mich. plant reaches five years with no lost-time accidents

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

POET Biorefining – Caro (Mich.) this month hit the five-year mark for no lost-time accidents, a phenomenal safety record for an industrial facility.

POET Biorefining – Caro is a 53 million gallon-per-year ethanol production facility with 45 full-time employees. General Manager David Gloer said the employees were proud to have reached this important milestone, and they now had their sights set on eliminating all accidents, not just lost-time accidents.

A lost-time accident is an on-the-job injury that requires the employee to miss time at work.

“This milestone is a credit to the diligence of all team members,” Gloer said. “No one person at the facility can make this happen. It takes all of us working together, communicating, and watching out for ourselves and one another to achieve this success. I’m proud of our entire team, and look forward to celebrating 10 years of no lost-time accidents.”

Safety is a priority at all of POET’s 26 plants, POET Chief Operating Officer James Moe said, and many other plants have significant streaks of no lost time. Caro now joins POET Biorefining – Hudson (S.D.) in reaching the five-year record.

“We’ve made safety a priority here at POET,” Moe said. “Clearly Caro and Hudson have created a culture supporting this.”
