ALEXANDRIA, IN. Today in Alexandria, Indiana, POET hosted a grand opening ceremony for their 23rd ethanol production facility. POET, the largest producer of biofuels in the world, was joined at the opening of POET Biorefining – Alexandria by Indiana Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman; Andy Miller, Director of Indiana Department of Agriculture and Chris Novak, Executive Director of Indiana Corn Growers Association.

“This is an exciting time. And right here in Alexandria we are making a difference by changing our world’s energy supply.” Jeff Broin, CEO of POET, said. “If our world wants sustainable energy, we need change. We need a revolution - a renewable one.”

"POET's new ethanol plant in Alexandria further strengthens Indiana as a national leader in the production of biofuels," said Lieutenant Governor Skillman. "Governor Daniels and I congratulate POET on the grand opening of their second plant in our state. This plant will stimulate our agriculture industry, create new jobs to Madison County residents and provide a clean and home-grown fuel to Hoosiers."

The facility, the 29th constructed by POET since they were founded 20 years ago, will be equipped with technology that decreases its environmental footprint. That technology includes POET’s patent-pending BPX™ process that eliminates the need for heat in the cooking process of producing ethanol, reducing energy usage by 8-15 percent in comparison with conventional plants. It will also be outfitted with a regenerative thermal oxidizer that eliminates up to 99.9 percent of air emissions.

“Indiana corn farmers - through investment of their corn checkoff dollars - have made a major commitment to promote the use of ethanol in our state,” said Chris Novak, Executive Director of Indiana Corn Marketing Council. “The grand opening of POET’s second ethanol plant in Indiana represents the many positives that a robust biofuels industry can bring to our state, including a new market for area corn farmers, new jobs, a cleaner environment and less dependence on foreign oil.”

“We appreciate the support POET has given Alexandria,” said Mayor Jack Woods. “Their contribution to the community has been immense.”

POET Biorefining – Alexandria will utilize 22 million bushels of corn from the area to produce 65 million gallons of ethanol and 178,000 tons of Dakota Gold Enhanced Nutrition Distillers Products™ per year. Ethanol marketing for the facility is provided by POET Ethanol Products and byproducts are marketed by POET Nutrition. Rail access is through Norfolk Southern. The $115 million facility employs 42 people with an annual payroll above $2 million.

POET Biorefining – Alexandria is the second of three ethanol production facilities POET will open in Indiana. A production facility near North Manchester, Ind. will begin production in the fourth quarter of this year.
