POET donates containment equipment to Lincoln County Emergency Management

Thursday, March 12, 2009

Damage due to hazardous waste spills from a variety of sources will be more quickly contained thanks to a donation today from POET to emergency responders in Lincoln County, S.D.

POET donated a response trailer with an estimated value of $20,000 to Lincoln County Emergency Management. The trailer contains booms and other equipment for containment of hazardous waste spills and will allow a rapid response to such emergencies in the county.

“We no longer needed the response trailer, and we realized the equipment would fit perfectly with Lincoln County Emergency Management’s needs,” said Joel Jarman, General Manager of POET Biorefining – Hudson, S.D. “We’ve always had a good working relationship with the emergency responders here in the past, and I’m happy we were able to help the residents of Lincoln County with this donation.”

Lincoln County Emergency Management has relied on the Sioux Falls Hazmat for containment equipment in the past. The response trailer will allow them to more quickly react if a hazardous material is leaked onto the ground or into a river, lake or stream in Lincoln County.

“If we have any kind of issue where a hazardous material gets into the water, it will allow us to deploy booms to contain it until a cleanup crew can get there,” said Harold Timmerman, Coordinator for Lincoln County Emergency Management. “It will be an asset for Lincoln County and everyone in the area.”

POET had the response trailer on site at POET Biorefining – Hudson, S.D. as a requirement for storing the denaturant that is added to ethanol to make it unsuitable for consumption. New ethanol blending technology has eliminated the need to store large amounts of denaturant, however, so the response trailer is no longer needed at the site.
