Broin Companies Propose Ethanol Plant in Hamilton County

Wednesday, December 15, 2004

Sioux Falls, SD - The Broin Companies are proud to announce preliminary plans for construction of an ethanol plant near Jewell, Iowa in Hamilton County. The proposed plant will be known as Horizon Ethanol, LLC.

David Lambert, Director of Site Development for Broin Companies stated, “This selection follows a successful evaluation process including local community leaders, area utility representatives, Hamilton County officials and staff from the Broin Companies.” Surveying, permitting and other site development activities are moving forward at a brisk pace. Although no specific time table has been officially determined, local leaders have been notified that construction could start as early as next spring.

Horizon Ethanol will produce 60 million gallons of ethanol per year, an environmentally friendly premium fuel, consume more than 21,000,000 bushels of corn from the area, improving the local corn basis, and provide approximately 40 high quality jobs with an annual payroll near $2 million. The plant will also produce premium Dakota Gold brand livestock feed for local, regional and national markets.

The patent pending “Broin Project X” (BPX) process will be used at this new facility. The BPX process, which has been commercially successful at four Broin plants, not only reduces energy costs, but also releases additional starch content for conversion to ethanol, increases protein content and quality of byproducts, increases byproduct flowability, potentially increases plant throughput, and significantly decreases plant emissions.

“I am honored to announce an opportunity to partner with Hamilton County and the city of Jewell to make an environmentally friendly, technologically advanced, value-added production facility happen in the area,” said Jeff Broin, CEO of the Broin Companies. “This is a remarkable economic opportunity and we are excited about bringing this value-added business to the region.”

Catherine Bergman, Executive Director of the Hamilton County S.E.E.D. (Support for Enriching Economic Development) was thrilled to hear the news. “This is one of the greatest economic development opportunities we’ve had in Hamilton County in recent years. We are delighted to be working with the Broin Companies on this proposed development project.”

Horizon Ethanol will be the 24th ethanol plant built by the Broin Companies, who will provide turnkey development, design, engineering, construction, management and marketing services for the project. Broin Companies plants currently operating in Iowa include Tall Corn Ethanol in Coon Rapids; Iowa Ethanol in Hanlontown and Otter Creek Ethanol in Ashton. Voyager Ethanol, currently under construction, broke ground April 23rd in Emmetsburg. An Iowa project under active development is Frontier Ethanol near Gowrie.
