Broin Companies Announce Plans for 2 Ethanol Plants near Fort Dodge, Iowa

Monday, May 3, 2004

Sioux Falls, SD, Monday, May 3, 2004 - The Broin Companies are pleased to announce preliminary plans for construction of two ethanol plants near Fort Dodge, Iowa, with a third location to follow in the next several months. The proposed plants would each produce 60 million gallons of ethanol per year and each would consume more than 21,000,000 bushels of corn from the area around each facility (42 million bushels total). This equates to more than 280,000 acres of regional corn production. The two plants are envisioned to expand to 120 million gallons of capacity.

Frontier Ethanol, LLC would be located near Gowrie in Webster County and Summit Ethanol, LLC would be located near Hardy in Humboldt County. Broin Companies projects, unlike some in the industry, have allowed local corn producers to participate as owners with over 7,500 farm families invested in Broin Companies projects to date.

“We are excited about being involved in the tremendous growth of value-added processing in Humboldt and Webster counties,” said Jeff Broin, CEO of the Broin Companies. “Our companies have been looking at the Fort Dodge area for more than three years. This selection of site locations comes on the heels of a successful evaluation process including local community leaders, area utility representatives, county officials and staff from the Broin Companies. This is a remarkable economic opportunity for the Fort Dodge region and we are anxious to get construction underway.”

Although no specific time table has been officially determined, local leaders have been notified that construction could start as early as late summer.

John Hartford, president of the Humboldt County Economic Development Corporation was thrilled to hear the news. “This is perhaps the greatest economic development opportunity we’ve had in Humboldt County in recent years. We are delighted to be working with the Broin Companies on this proposed development project.”

James Crean, Executive Director of Webster County Development was pleased with the Broin Companies announcement of a site in Webster County. “Webster County Development is focused on the future of this region and we look forward to the economic impact this premier ethanol producer brings to our farmers. The proposed plant fits nicely into one of our key target industries – value added agriculture,” he said.

Frontier Ethanol and Summit Ethanol would be the 22nd and 23rd ethanol development projects for the Broin Companies, based in Sioux Falls, SD. For over 20 years, the Broin Companies have been successful in setting the standards for ethanol production and leading the ethanol industry in technological advances and successful development projects. Broin Companies will provide turnkey development, design, engineering, construction, management and marketing services for the projects.

Each of the plants will consume more than 21 million bushels of corn from the regional area and provide 40 highly skilled, good paying jobs with an annual payroll over $1.5 million. Frontier Ethanol and Summit Ethanol will also help dramatically improve the local corn basis while providing an environmentally friendly fuel and a premium Dakota Gold Plus® brand livestock feed for local, regional and national markets.
